Born in Florence Arizona, raised by multiple auants and by copper mining town Arizona making art for a living was never seen as a viable option. Men were expected to grow up to get work down in the copper mines. Paradoxically, many of the Ruiz family had a preternatural disposition toward drawing and painting, but he was the one who took to it with the type of determination necessary to make it more than a curiosity.
His travels took him to California where he studied art at Santa Barbara Community College and the San Francisco Art Institute. It was during his time in college that he discovered the many varied ways oil painting can achieve the desired results he applies today.
In San Francisco he met his wife and their first child was born in 2001. Eventually they moved and settled into a comfortable life in Georgia. Joe has lived in GA since 2004 with his wife and children (a son and a daughter) a cat and a dog and several chickens.
